Environmental truth: Unwanted but..

Can truth be a business model?

Truth cannot be sold. It can be researched and found if you want to.

Truth is not a business model, but truth-seeking is a much-needed and rare skill paid into the currency called trust. And trust has much deeper roots than misinformation.

Because Truth has never been a business model so far, it's not something that you would normally go for. Do you see "truth" in a job description? Actually, if you ask someone about their relationship with the truth, you may end up with some vague statement. That happens because values are not seen as soft skills, can't be measured and when those who have that skill/value do not have a shared home. But actually, values make the difference.

Fortunately, things evolve and environmental truth can now benefit from a growing new generation that embraces a values-driven culture, incorporating change and sustainability into their critical thinking. This new generation must be consistent and relevant to the legions of deniers or disengaged citizens out there who have multiple reasons for ignoring environmental issues, each requiring a different approach, all in urgent need of a more freely available verified truth:

  • The "happy not to know" legion

They suspect the environment may be at risk of destruction but think that the elements they dispose of are not enough. They feel that the environment is not their priority.

  • The "I know enough" legion

They are convinced to possess all the available information and consider that it does not justify further action.

  • The "I know what I need to know" legion

They are proud of their knowledge and understanding of facts. Presented with the evidence, they avoid taking it into consideration.

  • The "I know and I hide" legion

They purposefully omit information, typically due to economic reasons or benefits.

Policymakers, funding and research converge where media attention and societal dynamics drive them. The environmental agendas that Governments recognize rely therefore on the ability to disseminate knowledge simultaneously, transversally and consistently across all levels of society.

Siloed knowledge management systems and elitist bubbles clearly do not serve the scope. Knowledge shall flow and grow across ecosystems in an open, incorruptible way fed by knowledgeable participants and innovators from science, technology, policymaking, strategy and academy. Misinformation can spread faster, but trust has much deeper roots. That's where AOTs position themselves. In this sense, we are making Truth a business model.
